About Kaul Inge
Inge Kaul, adjunct professor at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, Germany and advisor to various governmental, multilateral and non-profit organizations on issues of international cooperation finance, public-private partnerships and global-issue diplomacy. She was the first director of the Human Development Report Office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), a position which she held from 1989 to 1994, and director of the UNDP’s Office of Development Studies from 1995 to 2005. Inge Kaul is the author of numerous publications on international public economics and finance and was the lead editor of Providing Global Public Goods: Managing Globalization (Oxford University Press, 2003) and The New Public Finance: Responding to Global Challenges (Oxford University Press, 2006). Her current research focuses on institutional issues of global public goods provision, especially UN system reform and the future of multilateralism.

The current economic crisis is yet another stark reminder of the new policy challenges facing the world. While attention has shifted to the economic crisis, other crises, such as global warming and new communicable diseases, have been temporarily left in the dark. Looking at today's challenges in the context of global public goods could potentially point policy makers in the right direction for reform. The global nature of these public goods requires nations to make reforms that take not only their own but also global interests to heart.
